>> What is Digital Department about?

::I've created Digital Department (or DD in short) to show people my progress as a graphic designer working for mc2, a student TV here in Slovakia funded by Slovak University of Technology and a photographer (mostly the first one). To share my two cents with the rest of the world. Moreover, I've always loved to write blogs and journals so I thought - hell, why not? It may be fun after all. Who knows?

Victory Beat 2010, part 3 (duh!)

:: Hello there, my "die hard fans". :D (oh, sarcasm, I love you)

As you can read from the heading, I continue in the project which started this whole blog. It's a web design which should serve for a music contest that will take place sometime in the next year and it's being done for mc2.

Previously, I wrote that our coder had told me to change the layout as the original one was completely unusable. So I took another try and slightly modified the last design because I didn't and don't want to change the overall look. Now, it's not unusable, it's just plain and bare. Well, butter my buscuit, boy but I really don't know what to add. Any ideas, guys?

Here's the sneak peak at the actual design.

Victory Beat 2010, The war wages on

:: Hello there!

I'm back again and I come bearing update as I promised previous week. I had a chat with our coder and with one of my fellow graphic designers and the overall idea was to make the concept less complicated thus making the design easier to navigate and more intuitive for possible visitors. Well, I did evereything I could. What you can see below is a strong WIP so there are mistakes here and there and a lot of things is still missing. Just wanted to keep you updated on my progress. It took me 2 hours to do it. At least 30 minutes took up making of the new buttons up from the scratch. Real pain in the ass but I like the outcome.

Codename: Victory Beat 2010 (2011 ?)

:: Hi there, guys.

So, on one ordinary and common day, my fellow graphic designer calls me and he's all "Hi. There's this music contest web design thingy we need to get done but I'm working on lots of other projects these days so I was thinking you might want to have a look at it." It was years ago since I've put together some decent design for web. Nevertheless, I decided to dust my ye 'olde graphic skills and after a personal meeting or two, I was on the case.

Basicaly, what I had to do was to create a template for a new music contest web and also come up with some interesting name for it (optional, fortunately). I was quite pleased as I haven't done any graphics in ages.

To my happiness and satisfaction, I came up with a rough idea only a few days later from our last meeting and it went smooth right from the start. The only problem is the fact I'm employed full-time at Lenovo which takes major amount of my free time and in most cases when I get home from work, I'm so exhausted that I rarely find myself in the mood to do something else. It's the field experience
that motivates me.

But enough talk. Here's the result so far so you can imagine what I'm talking about all the time:

 This is the main page of the web, from this you can see the main logo, logo of our TV, mc2, main tab and three minors, each for one of the three clubs where music bands will compete against each other for the final victory.

Victory BEAT 2010? Well, something that popped in my mind in the process of creation. Nothing fancy, I reckon but I like the outcome of its final design. That would be for the first page, now let's move to the second.

On this second page you should have had several smaller tabs with the names of the music bands and after you chose one a promo video would play on the main screen located to the left. Below the main screen, there is the band name, the city where it comes from and a rather short (or long?) description. Pretty basic, necessary stuff in a sleek design, eh? Yeah, I thought as much.

Now that's where our coder comes in. :D

From my fellow graphic designer's "wow"s and "cool"s I fell right to the bottom. 80% of the design is unusable and unacceptable. I have to redo it from the scratch, mostly resize the main panel and overally make the web site more simple. Technical stuff, PHP and other basic facts.

Well, right from the beggining I thought I was doing the most simple looking web design in my life but in the end you come to a conclusion that it's almost an overkill.

And yeah, that's it. I will have to redo it again and I'll keep you updated on the progress so keep your eyes peeled.

And a little bonus for you, readers. Close-up of the main logo. Nothing too complicated, I guess.
